of republicans, newt gingrich, for example, saying, hey, mitt romney, get out there, pick a fight, and win it. jim acosta with me now from the romney campaign. the debate, of course, tomorrow night in denver, you, sir, are in littleton, colorado. should we take mitt romney at face value when he says this debate is not about me winning? >> reporter: well, brooke, i think this is all part of the debate expectations game that has been going on for several days now. i think you also sort of heard mitt romney downplay some of the talk that has been going on since the new york times reported over the weekend that, you know, mitt romney is preparing all the zingers for the debate and you heard people saying maybe he's not preparing zingers. a lot of this is the head fake to the head fake to the head fake. of course, mitt romney and the president are both probably working on lines of attack that they'll deliver at this debate. that is sort of standard operating procedure. you saw that scott brown, elizabeth warren debate last night in massachusetts. this is what campaigns do. this is what candidates

except south carolina where newt gingrich started off hot and stayed hot. mitt romney is disciplined, focused in a debate he sounds and loos like a president as he did in his interview with brine williams on education nation yesterday. he will have a good debate performance. two, he needs an -- some form of implosion or serious mistake by the obama campaign or some international event that doesn't rally people around the president but focuses people on a perceived weakness. i don't think either of those are likely to happen. in terms of a mistake by the obama campaign, they've always been fairly safe and cautious. if this were a sporting event, i would say they're running out the clock right now. >> running out the clock and, in fact, perhaps too cautious. you've got hillary clinton going to, perhaps, a dozen meetings with foreign leaders and president obama already out of here in ohio, not meeting with any of the foreign leaders, do you think that they are playing it too safe by not meeting with president morsi, not meeting with netanyahu, avoided any pitfalls here in new york? >> w

's attention to the comments of a newton leroy gingrich who is giving advice to mitt romney ahead of the debates. this is what newt gingrich said last night on cnn. >> they seem to have a overly methodical model where they go out and keep saying the same thing and it done -- the world's too fluid, too sophisticated for that, it's clearly something that you can go out and you can communicate and you can do dramatically better than romney's currently doing. >> lois, everybody in the republican party has advice for mitt romney ahead of the debate. rich lowry writes new yoo inven will save romney, it all comes down to him. what do you make of that? >> what it gets down to now, we have 40 days and can they turn around the narrative? it's looking less and less likely. obama people laid out a narrative he was out of touch that he was too rich, he was all of these things and then he played right into it with the 47% comment. and i think that's resonated with people. i've heard it from teen averages from venders, you know, people are remembering that and i don't know that he can turn it ar

'm, obviously, partisan. but just this morning on "morning joe," newt gingrich, who debated him many, many times, said that he got clobbered by him, that mitt romney, when he had to down in florida, literally turned things around, everybody saw that and knows that. mitt romney debated -- tim pawlenty said he's as good as a debater as there is, i'm telling you that because i debated him all the time. these are guys that ran against him. the fact is that mitt romney is very good debater. he's done a very good job. he's practiced and practiced and practiced and he's been flying around with, you know, the person playing obama on his airplane every minute. he's gone away and done five debates in 48 hours up in new hampshire or vermont or somewhere. this is the biggest deal in the world to him. he's been really getting ready for it and as we know from my experience with president bush, that debate can mean a lot. i went up eight to ten points after that debate, so mitt romney has a lot more going for him here. the president on the other hand, has to be president every day. just gave two speeches i tho

gingrich and rick perry on immigration to win that nomination. if he had come out and, you know, said that he was for the dream act sort of the way gingrich did, he still would have gone on to win the nomination and now he would be in a position -- >> you think so? >> -- to compete for latino votes, but he's not a skillful enough politician to anticipate that, and all he can do is say whatever is necessary to get him through the day. this comes out of his experience in the business community where, you know, all he did when he went in and closed these deals is say whatever was necessary to close the deal no matter whether it was true or not and then he'd negotiate about it later, you know, after he took over the company. so this is the world he comes out of, and it just does not equip him for politics. here is the other thing that i think has been missed in the last couple days is there's been some, you know, journalism that says, well, okay, he's not equipped for politics but he'd be a good president. no. if you're a bad politician, you're not going to be a good president either. >>

, it was newt gingrich offering some advice to romney's messaging strategy, telling him how to disarm president obama. we've heard from peggy noonan a couple of times now. how is the campaign reacting to all of this inside chatter? or are they? >> this is a constant irritation for the campaign. they feel like every donor, every republican who lost in a primary, and frankly, every reporter, thinks they know how to run a better campaign than they do. they wish that they could do our -- or they say they wish they could do our jobs too to give us an idea of the difference. they try to brush these things off. the campaign has its own staffers who help manage, especially the conservative media, reach out to try to keep things like that happy. but they undercut their conservative message when you say things like romney did to ron allen in ohio, they continue to undercut their ability to turn the page with conservative commentators. >> i always like getting your perspective on this next question, because you spend more time with governor romney than just about anything, with the exception of folks that

guess it was in florida with newt gingrich where he basically took gingrich's pants off on the issue of what was in his investment portfolio and won that state by a big margin. this is obviously tk- different. it's a national audience, not a republican audience, he has to win people over. it's a different kind of challenge over a sitting president who is pretty smooth performer. what john roberts said is right, debates sometimes make a difference but not very often. normally what happened in debates people for you going in are still for you coming out and not a lot of minds get chained. chris christie saying it could change everything, it could happen but not very much. martha: if somebody loses their pants it might be a game changer. we'll be watch that very closely. >> that depends, martha entirely on the design of the electri lecterns. >> we'll wait for the town hall format and hope for that perhaps. you just mentioned chris christie, what do you think he is up to by that comment? >> i have no idea and i'm sure the romney headquarters in boston, they are scratching their heads up

of the candidates romney was running against, newt gingrich and rick santorum, almost certainly those candidates would not have stayed in race as long as they did, would not have been viable candidates after losing several contests, in each case, without basically a billionaire or two backing them with checks as high as $500 million. and as a result, republican primary was much more prolonged than it would have been. romney and his friends had to spend much more money than expected defending him in those early months. and really the whole dynamic of what we were used to in early presidential politics where i will, new hampshire, south carolina got a nominee was sort of updated for a few weeks. since then, super pacs, when romney with the nomination, -- he'd relied heavily on super pacs through the summer months he was advertising. of course, this is not technically coordinated advertising, and trevor can speak of realities and fiction there. and it had some clear obvious positive affects of holding parity with the president as he unleashed an attack against romney this summer. but it also has sh
